This piece is taken from Robert Brownings (1812 - 1889) great work 'Rabbi Ben Ezra'. On calfskin vellum size 321mm x 217mm. The text, written in Chinese ink, is in the Humanistic hand. The border, in the style of Italian Renaissance manuscripts, has a solid background of 24ct gold powder, the plants and creatures painted over this are in gouache colours.

Follow your Saint

by sixteenth century English poet, Thomas Campion.

The initial letter of this piece is illuminated with 'white vine-stem' decoration in the style of the Italian Humanists of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The letter F is in flat gold leaf with gouache colours and chinese ink making up the background. The text is written in the Humanistic lettering style.

From Isaiah, chapter 2, verse 4. This piece is based on the illumination found in the beautiful twelfth century Winchester Bible. The black text in the Carolingian lettering style, is written with Chinese ink and the coloured versal letters are written with gouache. The initial B is worked with flat gold leaf and gouache colours. On calfskin vellum, size 280mm x 246mm.
